CHRISTOS J. PALIOS
IMAGINE SEEING EVERYTHING all around you at once, in true color, in perfect light - up, down, left, right, all-around - an inspiring 360° perspective constructed liked a world atlas and unfurled before you. Each work is comprised of 300-500 individually-captured photographs, combined to create what essentially becomes a seamless mosaic beyond a viewer’s entire field of vision.
In order to realize a space in its entirety, our natural tendency is to turn our head, neck, and often our bodies. The idea of photographically capturing this simple, yet partial movement on a single plane, enables me to construct a novel and all-encompassing view for the spectator. The temporal as well as physical limitation of our angle of vision could not reproduce that magnificent experience in this way. Light, color, and texture unequivocally become prerequisite elements within my compositions.
CREATIVITY TENDS TO HARBOR aspects of predictability, considerably through the medium of photography. Thus, meticulousness takes an utmost importance in my search for engaging subjects conducive to my style of work. Whether abandoned and dilapidated or contemporary and elegant, I’m drawn to specific environments that reveal embedded layers of texture and narrative, historical presence, thoughtful design, symmetry and asymmetry.
For example, in Bus Retro and Steel Upward, these photographic panoramas epitomize a historical slice of time in the imagination - fading ebbs of bygone moments revisited in fresh light. Quaint, pictorial anachronisms resurfacing for meaning in a modern world of flux.
Capturing such elements that may otherwise appear commonplace, I strive to sculpt them into meaningful, compelling visual narratives._____
FIRST-GENERATION GREEK-AMERICAN, Baltimore-raised. Rarely lazy, not a minute without ambition. A smorgasbord of traits: passionate, driven, mercurial, genuine, a tad stubborn, all in a sponge-like absorbent shell. An acute observer, always thinking, even a bit loopy at times, though by a healthy dose. I make things, sometimes make up things. For the love of the game. To keep you smiling. Tip top.
I HAVEN’T YET ENDURED a 10K race, planted more than a few trees (except for Bonsai), or sailed around the world. All are on my list. I have, however, traveled to see magnificent cultures that have offered profound experiences. These remarkable moments continue to provide me with a gratifying sense of significance for the little things among us, and a grandly-inspiring purpose in the heart. My springboard originates in design, animation, and photography, consummated by a degree from the University of Maryland in Baltimore.
IF ANYONE WERE TO ASK ME what I’m passionate about, I would cite the meaningful moments and facets that move me purely. That may involve exotic parrots, the art of bonsai, a film cheered by a good friend, raw almonds, light & color, volunteering time and effort, my dearest family and friends, and of course, a resplendent subject screaming for attention. Without such empowering elements that inspire and drive my core, down into the smallest fibers of heart and mind, I am void.
I deeply believe in comradery, diligence, passion, and power of self.
Remember: the best art is the kind that speaks to you in some way, that you can’t easily forget; the kind that comfortably challenges your mind while delighting your heart.
